Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), a perennial blooming plant native to central and southwest Asia as well as the Mediterranean region, is the subject of the Yashtimadhu Tablet. It is extensively farmed for its four-foot-deep, delicious taproot. Yasthimadhu is also known as “sweet root” because of its sweet flavor. In Sanskrit it is called yashtimadhu – ‘yashti’ meaning ‘stem, stalk; and madhu, meaning ‘sweet’. In Hindi liquorice is known as ‘mulethi’. The perennial root is rounded, long and straight, hard, and fibrous. It is grayish outside and yellowish within. The cortex contains its most attractive qualities. It is abundantly grown in Punjab and the sub-Himalayan plains of India.
Yasthimadhu was formerly used as a medication rather than a spice. The root of the plant is the primary component utilised in medicine. This root is appreciated mostly for its sweet taste and ability to cover over the harshness, pungency, and taste of other medicines. It is a demulcent and mild relaxant that soothes mucosal irritations. The root is suggested by Ayurveda as an effective remedy for coughs, colds, and other bronchial irritations.
Yasthimadhu is used in the treatment of psoriasis, eczema, skin rashes, and dry, itchy skin. According to studies, Yasthimadhu has demulcent and anti-inflammatory compounds that may lessen the symptoms of atopic dermatitis (eczema). Skin issues can be resolved by simply dabbing a concentrated root extract from Yasthimadhu onto the affected region 2 to 3 times each day. Similar to other phytoestrogens, Yasthimadhu demonstrates modest estrogenic effects.
