Rheumatism is defined as any of various conditions characterised by inflammation or pain in muscles, joints or fibrous tissue.

Articular rheumatism is due to inflammation or degeneration of joints leading to pain in elbow joints, shoulder joints etc. which are labeled as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder etc.

Arthritis is an inflammation of joints due to infectious, metabolic, or constitutional causes. Joint pain, stiffness and swelling are the most common symptoms. There may be reduction in the range of motion, redness on the joint, with symptoms worse in morning in many cases.

Some of the most common type of arthritis are: Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis

• Osteoarthritis: Commonly called wear and tear arthritis, which is a degeneration that affects the weight bearing joints like hips, knees, and spine. It can also affect fingers, thumb, neck and large toe. Symptoms include pain and soreness especially on movement of joint, stiffness after rest, joint swelling, etc.
• Rheumatoid arthritis: It affects joints of both sides, resulting in inflammation of the joints due to an auto-immune pathology. Skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood or nerves can also be affected with time.

Non-articular rheumatism is characterized by pain in muscles called myalgia & patients complain of lethargy, malaise and a feeling of tiredness.

Factors predisposing man to rheumatism are familial tendency, metabolic disorders, injury, stress and strain, lack of exercise, allergy, dietary factors etc.

Diagnosis is made with the help of a physical examination, blood tests like anti-CCP, RF and ANA. An X-ray, MRI or CT may also be required to rule out some causes. Treatment is focused on pain management. Heating pads or ice packs can be applied on the joint. Physical therapy and mobility assistance devices are also advised.

Arnica montana: Rheumatism, from exposure to dampness, cold, and from excessive muscular strain. Backache from muscle strain, overuse. Cervical vertebrae are tender. Muscles of neck weak, head falls backwards or any side. Sacrum feels as if beaten.

Cantharis: The pains are burning, and sharp, lancinating along the course of a nerve. Neuralgia of head and face from taking cold, with loud screams and jerking of muscles. Stiffness in the nape of the neck, with tension when bending it over. Acute drawing pains in the back. Tearing in the back (after rising from a seat). Sensation of constriction in the spine. Weakness and swelling of limbs.

Gaultheria: This is of service in neuralgia, especially protracted cases in which the pain is most excruciating. It also useful in articular rheumatism, both of the acute and subacute varieties, as well as in gouty arthritis.

Methyl salicyclate.: An artificial gaultheria oil for rheumatism, especially when the salicylates cannot be used.

Acid formicum: Chronic arthritis of traumatic nature can be treated by formic acid. Pains usually worse on right side, motion and better from pressure.
